The Olmsted Parks System

Louisville is one of only four cities in the world with a park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the legendary landscape architect behind New York's Central Park.

Cherokee Park

East Highlands

Famous for its 2.4-mile scenic loop, Cherokee Park features rolling hills, open meadows, and wooded trails. It's a daily destination for runners, cyclists, and dog walkers, blending seamlessly into the surrounding historic neighborhoods.

Iroquois Park

South End

Known as Louisville's "Yellowstone," this rugged, heavily wooded park features a stunning scenic overlook with panoramic views of the city skyline. It also houses a beautiful open-air amphitheater that hosts national touring acts.

Shawnee Park

West Louisville

Located along the banks of the Ohio River, Shawnee Park offers sweeping river views, expansive sports fields, and a beautiful Great Lawn. It's a beloved gathering space and a cornerstone of West Louisville.

Louisville Waterfront Park

Downtown's Riverfront Anchor

This 85-acre park successfully reconnected downtown Louisville to the Ohio River. It features expansive walking paths, a massive Great Lawn for festivals (like Forecastle and WFPK Waterfront Wednesday), playgrounds, and splash pads. The crown jewel is the Big Four Bridge, a decommissioned railroad bridge converted into a stunning pedestrian walkway connecting Louisville to Southern Indiana.

The Parklands of Floyds Fork

One of the largest new urban park projects in the nation, this massive 4,000-acre system spans eastern Jefferson County.

Four Connected Parks

East County

The system consists of Beckley Creek, Pope Lick, Turkey Run, and Broad Run parks, all connected by the Louisville Loop trail system.

Outdoor Adventure

Activities

Beyond traditional playgrounds and sports fields, The Parklands offers extensive hiking trails, dedicated mountain biking paths, and miles of water trails for canoeing and kayaking along Floyds Fork creek.

E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park

A State Park in the Suburbs

Located in eastern Louisville, this state park is a massive hub for active recreation. It features a world-class BMX track, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, extensive fitness and hiking trails, a large dog park, and numerous sports fields. It's incredibly popular with families and recreational leagues.

Jefferson Memorial Forest

America's Largest Urban Forest

Located just 15 miles from downtown in South Louisville, this is the largest municipally-owned urban forest in the United States. Created in 1945 to honor military veterans, it has grown from 1,500 acres to preserve critical habitat for migratory birds and protect 275 species of trees, shrubs, and ferns. The forest provides crucial environmental benefits and offers dozens of hiking and equestrian trails, ranging from easy to strenuous, that are enjoyable year-round.
